Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.
Oprah Winfrey
As a premed student who’s main goal is to become doctor, it is difficult to feel as though you are able to explore passions and interests outside of the sciences or medicine in particular. Especially with the urge to check the boxes necessary for the seemingly never ending “next step” in your educational journey.
That just it! Viewing medicine as a journey with a distinct end and saying to yourself that you will “enjoy yourself” or “be happy” once that moment comes opens one up to dissapointment and inevitably burnout. It is easier to want to just focus on the streamlined path in front of you as that is easy, but in relegating other parts you are not taking care of your self and nuturing the parts of you that separate you from another premed student.
It is not going to be easy taking time for those other passions. As Donovan Bailey said:
Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all don’t let anyone limit your dreams.
Donovan Bailey
Therefore, if something is important to you, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice. Those sacrifices will be worth it because you’ll feel more enriched and energized to tackle obstacles that may come your way.
